Personalized Wine & Whiskey Barrel Buying Guide

How Does it Work?

Our handcrafted american white oak barrels make a great addition to any home bar, man cave, or home brewery. Not only do they look great, but they can actually improve the taste and quality of the spirits you store in them, making them great gifts for home brewers and connoisseurs alike. These oak barrels work just like the large commercial barrels used in professional distilleries:

Faster Aging

Smaller barrels age 5 to 10 times faster than your standard distillery barrels, significantly shortening the aging process. One month aging in a small barrel is roughly the equivalent of a year aging in the larger barrels.


Addition by subtraction, the traditional wooden construction naturally allows some of the spirit to evaporate. This natural process makes the flavors of the remaining spirits more complex and intense.

Infused Flavor

The inside of the barrels have been flame seared to smooth them and release more flavor. Contact between the hand-selected, charred white oak can bring out the woody flavors and malt notes of the spirit.

Aging Spirits | Whiskey, Bourbon, and More

Oak barrels at home are most commonly used for storing or aging scotch, whiskey, and bourbon, but work great for just about any spirit. Tequila, brandy, rum, cognac, and even vodka all do great when stored in a clean, properly cured barrel. Wine and beer can also be aged in the oak barrels, but may require a special airlock depending on the stage of aging or lagering.

Wine & Whiskey Barrel Ownership Tips

Curing Your Oak Barrel

Before filling your barrel with whiskey or spirits, it’s important to cure your barrel following the included instructions. This will prevent the barrel from leaking or evaporating too quickly.

  1. Rinse the barrel thoroughly to remove and wood debris or sediment
  2. Fill the barrel with water and allow to sit for 3-7 days.
  3. During this time the wood will expand, tightening the barrel at the seams. It’s normal for the barrel to leak water during this period, so place somewhere like a sink, tub, or over a bucket.
  4. Place the barrel in a dry area, filled with water.
  5. Keep the barrel filled with water until it stops draining.
  6. Once it’s no longer draining, empty and rinse the barrel, and you’re ready to go!

Cleaning/Caring For Oak Barrels

Store your barrel in a cool place and out of direct sunlight. This will protect the barrel itself as well as the spirits inside.

Over time the exterior of the barrel will start to show wear. It’s perfectly fine to lightly sand the exterior of the barrel and apply a water-based varnish.

Some of the terminology on the site or in our instructions might be foreign to you. Here's a guide to the various peices and parts of your typical oak aging barrel.

4 Things to Remember When Aging Your Own Spirits 

  1. Fill the barrel as full as possible, limiting the amount of air inside. Excess air can cause the spirits to age prematurely and possibly spoil or create off-flavors.
  2. There’s no hard and fast rules for how long you should let your spirits age for, it's all about the taste, and it's all up to you! We recommend tasting your batch about once a week, taking note of the flavors and how they're changing. When the flavors are where you want it, either start drinking it or move it to a glass bottle to stop the agining process
  3. Due to the smaller size of the barrel and the greater contact area ratio, these smaller barrels age 5 to 10 times faster than your standard distillery barrels. This means that one month aging in a small barrel is about the equivalent of a year aging in the larger barrels.
  4. For best results, between each use rinse the barrel and fill with a cleaning solution like Soda ash or Barolkleen and allow to soak for 2-3 days. Rinse the barrel again thoroughly before use.
